KANDAHAR

Overview

Welcome to the Political Capital of Afghanistan.

Kandahar is the second largest city in Afghanistan after Kabul. It is an area of great political and historical interest as it is the birthplace and burial place of the founders of Afghanistan, Hotak in 1709 and Durrani in 1747. In fact, all Afghan kings after the Afghan Empire of the 18th century were born and buried here. Kandahar was the traditional seat of power for the Pashtuns for more than 300 years and is today the de facto capital of the Taliban. It is the hometown of the current leader of the Taliban, and the previous leader of them. The region around Kandahar is one of the oldest known human settlements. It was an important outpost of the Persian empire in the 6th century BC and Alexander the Great laid out the foundation of what is now Old Kandahar in 330 BC, but a major fortified city existed there probably as early as c.1000-750 BC. Kandahar is well known for its production of fine fruits - especially pomegranates.
