WAKHAN CORRIDOR

Overview

Welcome to the roof of the world.

The Wakhan Corridor is one of the most remote and inaccessible locations on Earth. This pristine region in the far northeast part of Afghanistan is known as the roof of the world’, with parts of it rising well above 3000m. It was established as a National Park in 2014.

With its natural glaciers, the temperature in the area is generally minus zero throughout the year and sometimes reaches below -40. It is the perfect habitat for the snow leopard, antelope/wild goats, the Marco Polo bear and some of the rarest birds in the world, so, understandably, this pristine and untouched region of the world is under the protection of the environmental department.

Travel in this area requires oxen, horses, and donkeys so you will need to take a minimal amount of luggage.  There is no electricity here so the local people, famously called the Vakhi people, are not familiar with mobile phones, cameras, and other forms of technology. Vakhis are not interested in industrialization and are endeavoring to preserve their culture and natural lifestyle. They are so remote that they have remained unaware of the change of government in Afghanistan.

Traveling there definitely has its difficulties, but visiting one of the most natural and remote areas in the world, and experiencing a lifestyle so different from your own, is well worth it.
